| Cold (a lament | Cold Seasons |
We can perform on different stages: music clubs, open-air stages, art-cafe, exhibition halls, rock bars ... Our program is very flexible and group has two incarnations: rock (with drums, and it has loud classic rock sound) and electroacoustic (without drums, it's light sound right for small clubs, exhibition halls and other).
Our band is also open for collaboration with folk and free jazz musicians, for improvisations and art experiment! We have perfomed together with avant-garde musicians Sergey Letov (saxophone), Vlad Makarov (cello), Aleksej Borisov (noise) and with poets, modern dancers and ethno performers (Sergey Starostin, Tandalaj Mondorova (Tuva), folk ensemble "Bright Day", etc).
Rada (singer and songwrither of "Rada & Ternovnik") worked with vocal improvisations in avant-garde and free-jazz projects.
We have recorded 15 albums on CD, 2 DVD editions. Some of our tracks were published on CD supplements of magazines "Elegy" (France) and "Audio-Video" (Russia). The best of "Rada & Ternovnik" was published in the leading Russian Hi Fi magazine "Stereo-Video" available in 35 000 copies in Russia and 6 000 copies in Ukraine. Music of "Rada & Ternovnik" used in soundtracks of documentary films "The Red Ring" and "Edem of Juri Negodaev" (about russian artist J.Negodaev). "Rada & Ternovnik" also took part in TV shows in Russia.
We participated in many rock and folk festivals, both major and independent, and took part in art-events such as poetic festivals, opening of Culture Centre (Klaipeda, Lithuania), Night of Museums (Moscow), etc. We had many long tours on Siberia, Ural and Baltic countries and concerts in Germany (Berlin, Munich, Nuremberg), France (Paris), Finland (Helsinki), Ukraine (Kiev), Moldova (Kishinev), Belarus (Minsk) and in 70 cities of Russia.
Our CD's "Marriage" and "Incantations" were highly appreciated in Russian and European editions and were recommended for participation in WMCE (World Music Charts European ).
RADA & TERNOVNIK on the stage is four players and sound engineer (for rock program) and two or three players (for electroacoustic). We have a special set of original video recordings to accompany the performance (we need the video projector hardware available on stage).

ABOUT Rada & TERNOVNIK (the history)
"Rada & Ternovnik" means Rada and the Blackthorn.
"Rada & Ternovnik" are the premiere Moscow darkwave/psychodelic
band, most famous for chanteuse Rada's phenomenal voice.
"Rada & Ternovnik" appeared in early 1990-ies as one of Russian
darkest indie bands. They played pioneering acoustic psychodelic music extremely
depressive in lyrics and outlook. Rada actively jammed with other highlights
of then burgeoning Russian indie scene, such as Kaliningrad's mystic reggae
legend "Komitet Okhrany Tepla"("Warmth Guarding Committee").
In 1991-92 Rada i Ternovnik produced their first CD "Graphics", muddled,
weird, depressive, but extremely powerful, something truly unique. In mid-1990-ies
"Rada & Ternovnik" mutated to a rock fourpiece, making even darker
music highlighting virtuoso vocal technique of Rada, who was compared often
with Diamanda Galas and Elisabeth Frazer. The CD "Sounds of Sorrow"
and numerous live cassete-only releases were recorded during this period. Listeners
very often experience specific shamanic influence of her voice, reporting weird
bodily feelings, sudden disappearance of gravitation, and many other unusual
things.
In 1998, "Rada & Ternovnik" made the first Russian trip-hop record
- "My love, my sorrow", still very dark, but melodic, agressive and
danceable at spots. "My love, my sorrow" was released by Russian goth/indie
label Ur-Realist jointly with the French dark wave label Prikosnovenie, also
the home to XVII Vie, Jack or Jive and Raksha Manchan. Since then all albums
of Rada were released by Ur-Realist in Russia and by Prikosnovenie in France.
2000 - At the same time Rada uses perfect opera technique, having spent seven
years on studies and polishing the technique with opera pedagogue. In the same
year Rada began to attend folklore seminars of Dmitry Fokin (Dmitry Pokrovsky's
ensemble participant, he had sung there for fifteen years & collected a
unique expeditionary material). To her astonishment, Rada finds out that her
voice in traditions of the Italian opera school harmoniously supplies specific
folk singing.
2001 - In the new century, "Rada & Ternovnik" incorporated acoustic
strings (cello, double bass, viola), bassoon; their music became lighter, with
medieval, folkish and classical influences apparent. Now "Rada & Ternovnik"
perform as a neoclassical ensemble, with cello and basoon duo playing the leading
role. The latest releases of "Rada & Ternovnik" all reflect this
neoclassical tendency to some degree; of these, the most powerful is "Salamandra"
(2002).
2003-2004 Since "Salamandra's" release, "Rada & Ternovnik"
acquired a harder, darker edge to their sound; the cello and the basoon are
out, replaced by harsh, almost industrial rhythm-section. The group was appearing
in a flurry of festivals and live performances. Of these,
the most memorable were the concert of Moscow underground gothic and industrial
artists in honour of sad passing of Jhon Balance of Coil and Threshold House
(2004). The same year Rada & Ternovnik were featured artists of Inferno
Radio Festival in Saint Peterburg, along with Cold Meat Industry's Arcana (Sweden).
2005 - "Rada & Ternovnik" were called "founders of Russian
dark movement". Their album "The Marriage"
(ZHENITBA) blends the trademark dark and sorrowful vocals of Rada with authentic
folklore music of a Russian ethnic collective "Yasnyj Den" ("The
Bright Day") into a rich tapestry of unique post-rock sound. In December
of 2005, the musical producer Nazim Nadirov recommended "Zhenitba"
by Rada and Ternovnik as the best ethno recording of 2005 for participation
in WMCE (World Music Charts European ).
December 2005 - INCANTATIONS (ZAGOVORY). INCANTANTIONS
continues and develops the tradition of the rithual authentic music that started
with MARRIAGE (ZHENITBA). Now the band does not just turn to Slavonic folklore
-- the abundance of ethnical instruments (Tibetan ritual trumpet, Australian
didgeridoo,South Indian kanjira, Russian wind instruments) is not a goal in
itself. Rather, it is a necessary condition to make it possible to show the
ancient roots of the band in all its diversity and variety. The disc "INCANTATIONS"
is published both in Russia and Ukraine. The best songs of "Rada &
Ternovnik" were published in February 2006 by the leading Russian Hi Fi
magazin Stereo-Video, available in 35 000 copies in Russia and 6 000 copies
in Ukraine.
Rada i Ternovnik remain one of the leading players on Russian indie scene; one
of the darkest, fascinating, tuneful, and certainly the most unique.
The live sound of the group is a blend of vast electronic landscapes with psychodelic guitar solos and heavy bass drone. The group has made a special set of original video recordings to accompany the performance (assuming the video projector hardware is available). The video is built from the interplay of disparately beautiful images - the Tibetian and Inca ritual masks, Indian sculptures and ancient Slavic inscriptions, painting of a Moscow artist G. Petrov and the video recording of a sunset at Sinai Peninsula. At "Rada & Ternovnik"'s concerts the listeners mark strong emotional influence of music. Band has a great many of concerts not only in Moscow, but all around Russia.

PRESS:
interpretacje rosyjskich piesni o czesto ekstatycznym finale niejednego z widzow
mogl wprawic w nieklamane zdumienie. Takiej muzyki w wykonaniu naszych wschodnich
sasiadow slyszalo dotad niewielu.
W ciagu swojej
dzialalnosci zespol oferowal bardzo roznorodne oblicza korzystajac rownie chetnie
z nowej muzyki kameralnej, poprzez awangardowy rock a skonczywszy na muzyce
ludowej, najczesciej rosyjskiej z okresu poganskiego i chrzescijanskiego, ale
takze szamanskiej muzyki dalekiej Polnocy.

"Interlude" von Rada & Ternovnik wird dagegen in der Tradition
des Jam- und Krautrock gehalten, wobei eine Dame mit wortlosem Gesang an den
Improvisationen teilnimmt.

Leaning heavily on the crutch of comparison to explain the indescribable:
if Thrill Kill Kult, Gitane Demone, In Gowan Ring, and an experimental jazz
band met with a gloomy reverb-y bass and a prog-rock guitar, you'd have something
like Rada & Ternovnik. Despite or because of its lo-fi feel, it's pretty
good gothy/atmospheric rock, though Rada's high operatic flights tremble on
the edge of decency and she's steadier with the slinkier, softer vocals. "Incantations"
opens buzzing with high drama and descends with bass and noirish saxophone,
which returns in cabaret style rather well at points. While the lyrics need
a Russian listener for full appreciation, emotions are still heady and passionate,
flung by moods as disparate as the tender pings of the harp and a psychedelic
guitar.
(Carolee - Gothic Beauty Magazine - INCANTATIONS)
All the albums of RADA & TERNOVNIK are made in different styles,
probably the only common thing is the fabulous Rada's four-octaves vocal and
her permanent intention to create something new from release to release, from
song to song. "My Love My Sorrow" is her most "electronic"
CD, which music is made by computers completely. Acoustically, it is an unexpected
and sympathetic hybrid from imported trip-hop and narrative single voice of
ancient Slavic song. Evidently, our native Slavic part is triumphant. Mathematically
adjusted rhythms and the strict functionality of music are crashed by unassailable
irrationality of the "enigmatic Russian soul". Monumental greatness
of Rada's opera vocals just emphasizes the cordiality of her calm and wise singing...
Just great, what I can say more?
(CD My Love My Sorrow (N.))
The frontwoman Rada is probably one of the few avantgarde faces of Moccow
scene. Or may be the most intellectual i meet till now. This album is based
on views about women in old Russian and Eastern myths. The corelations between
beauty and cruelty, punishment and deep love. When it comes to musical side
of this masterpiece i would like to mention Diamanda Gallas, "Death in
June", "Swans" and "Jarboe" names. Not that "Rada
& Ternovnik" sounds like their copycat, but the band share the same
atmosphere and artistic vision created by them. Deep, melanholic, dark and avangardish.

in mehreren Rezensionen. Ethno Rock, Dark Folk, Psychedelic, Alternative

milosnikom muzyki spod znaku francuskiej wytworni Prikosnovenie.

In that way the band switches from ethnofolk introductions to songs with touches
of a style that has relations with (very) smooth psychedelica.

about:
1
The group was formed in 1991, and since then it keeps the reputation of one of the most interesting phenomenons of Russian rock stage. In Russian press, Rada was commonly compared with Diamanda Galas, because of her truly unique vocal of 3.5 octaves. Listeners very often experience specific shamanic influence of her voice, reporting weird bodily feelings, sudden disappearance of gravitation, and many other unusual things. At the same time Rada uses perfect opera technique, having spent seven years on studies and polishing the technique with opera pedagogue. One must add that she often uses overtones of Russian folk singing, the folk melodic of northern part of Russia, unusual musical formation in many songs also comes from specific Russian folklore and close to Indian musical traditions. In lyrics by Rada appearing images and metaphors of Russian songs and specific Russian sorcery. Rada follows Tibetan Buddhism, though her poetry bears also heavy Russian Pagan influences. It should be mentioned, that Rada possesses nowadays rare specific aristocratic pronunciation, perfect and natural. Her Russian sounds exactly as it used to sound a century or more ago - from Pushkin, Tolstoy and Vertinsky. Maybe that is the reason why her songs are so loved among the descendants of Russian emigres, who live in contemporary France. They also keep loyalty to this specific sound of Russian language of XVIII-XIX centuries, unfortunately passing away. The percussionist of "Rada & Ternovnik", Kirill Rossolimo, adds singularity to the sound of the band with his experimental mixed set of percussion instruments from various musical cultures. He uses cajon (specific Peruvian instrument; nowadays often used by Spanish flamenco performers), jembe (West African drum), African and Indian drums, Tajik and Irish percussion instruments. The percussionist plays with hands only, even on brass. That gives very saturated, energetic low sound - ecological and natural, with highly expressed physiological effect on listeners. The guitarist of the band, Vladimir Anchevski, uses classical guitar school of 60s, being an heir of traditions of Jimmy Page. He joins meditative and psychedelic sound of guitar with hard energetic riffs. "Rada & Ternovnik" has released about 10 CDs on independent label "Ur-Realist", not to mention numerous live, bootleg and radio recordings. Their work is highly acclaimed in Europe as well as in Russia. "Prikosnovenie Records" (France) released a full-length album "My love, my sorrow" and a mini-CD of Rada's earlier songs. Music of "Rada & Ternovnik" was included on the compilation "Belladonna", also released by "Prikosnovenie". Despite several appearances in prime-time TV with live concerts, "Rada & Ternovnik" never signed a contract with any major label and remain independent. "Rada & Ternovnik" would have been very grateful for all information regarding actions and festivals they could participate in, especially in those of ethnical direction.
2
Rada was born in Gorky, educated in Ivanovo University (Russian Literature), and lived in Moscow since then. Before "Rada & Ternovnik" came to existence, Rada was a counter-culture rock-journalist. Rada was praised for exquisite poetry and vocal performance; she sang in jam-sessions with all kinds of avangarde musicians, among them many respected members of Russian jazz scene and musicians of Henry Cow. In Russian press, Rada was commonly compared with Diamanda Galas and Elizabeth Fraser, though the most apt comparison is, probably, another great Henry Cow collaborator: Dagmar Krause.
The group was formed in 1991 from remnants of the 1980-ies band called "Fey-Hoa" (a fruit growing in North China). "Fey-Hoa" guitarist Vladimir Anchevsky became the only constant member of "Rada & Ternovnik" since 1991 (and married Rada). Bassist of "Rada & Ternovnik", Igor Chernykh, played in a highly influental Moscow punk group "Tupye" (The Dumb), now defunct. On different occasions, "Rada & Ternovnik" used many kinds of strange percussion instruments, sitar, and reeds. During 1992-1998, "Rada & Ternovnik" issued 2 studio albums and 5 compact disks of live recordings. Despite several appearances in prime-time TV with live concerts and clip recordings, "Rada & Ternovnik" never signed a contract with any major label and remain staunchly independent.
Rada follows Tibetian Buddhism, though her poetry bears also heavy Pagan and Christian influences. The word "rock" in Russian means "fatum", the doom. "Rada & Ternovnik" call their music "psychodelic fatum".
Folklore motives, implicit in their music from the beginning, became highlighted with the arrival of new musicians: Gena Lavrientiev on viola, influenced by Gypsy and Indian motives, and John Kukaryamba on multi-varied ethnic percussions. They strengthened an element of psychodelia as well, by adding wordless/nonsense support vocals in style of mid-period "Gong".
"Rada & Ternovnik" recorded 4 full-length studio albums: "Grafika" (1992), "Pechal'nye Zvuki" (1995), "My love, my sorrow" (1999), "Holodnye Vremena" (2001) , "Salamandra" (2002) and have numerous live, bootleg and radio recordings. There is also an official concert CD, called "Russian Epos" (1999).
"Rada & Ternovnik" would have been very grateful for all information regarding actions and festivals they could participate in.
3 FOLK
"Rada & Ternovnik" would have been very grateful for all information regarding actions and festivals they could participate in, especially in those of ethnical direction. Ethnic & folk roots were always noticed in the music of this group. Paganism, shamanism, proto-slavonic music - these definitions pursued group from the very moment of its appearance on the Moscow rock stage in 1991 year. Meanwhile Rada was improving her singing ability with one of the best opera teachers Marina Kikina, developing a voice diapason up to three and more octaves, Vladimir Anchevsky (guitar player) took a great interest in jazz guitar, and the group recorded and released albums in various styles - from electronic trip-hop to jazz-rock. However the tendency to world music is always traced - sitar player Sergey Aleksandrov cooperated with the band in 1997, tabla player Tatiana Mizgiryova (1998), percussionist Gleb Gusseynov (åé - "Wooden Wheel"). In 2000 the events important for the subsequent life of group took place - Rada got acquainted with the violinist Gennady Lavrentiev (nowadays playing with Zulya Kamalova). He introduced distinct ethnic shade to the band's sound. In concerts Gennady plays not only violin, but also tabla & sings. In the same year Rada began to attend folklore seminars of Dmitry Fokin (Dmitry Pokrovsky's ensemble participant, he had sung there for fifteen years & collected a unique expeditionary material). At the seminars Dmitry Fokin acquainted the attendants with videomaterials, archival audio recordings. Rada understood that the majority of her songs which are not in traditional rock-culture are Russian national melodies reconstructed from archaic memory. The group has appeared to be far from rock-n-roll and from artificial, showing-off folk, but, absolutely close to authentic national tradition. The majority of melodies turned to be close to Russian Northern tradition. More than that, the subjects of the texts, their figurativeness, are close to national. Thus "I'll walk the path" has almost precisely followed ancient legend about the origin of the Earth, stated in the folk song "Near Kiev, near Chernigov", and the song "The Sun after the Moon " appeared to be similar to folk lullabyes. The next year the whole band attends D.Fokin's lessons, training overtone soundpicking, usual to folklore. To her astonishment, Rada finds out that her voice in traditions of the Italian opera school harmoniously supplies specific folk singing. Nowadays, high colorature notes and shrilling folklore overtones "get on well" in one & the same song. Rada recollects her philological education and re-reads the books devoted to Russian folklore in a new way, studies the metaphorical figurative world of Russian songs and spells. The result - a number of songs, reconstructing ancient slavonic perception of the world in modern language. Certain lines from the spells, images moved in Rada's songs. "The ground turned round" - the scoring of the round-dance "Wattle", "Cuckoo" - poetic retelling of Russian spells. The musicians began to sing with Rada, creating national polivocalism. Rada listens industriously folklore expeditionary recordings, studying Northern tradition. In 2002 unique drummer Kirill Rossolimo (åé-ADO, åé- DiDuLa) comes to the band. Kirill creates unique percussion sound, using Cahon (Spanish national percussive instrument) and Djembe (African drum covered with leather). To theså instruments Kirill has added cymbals and bass-drum. He plays cahon, djembe and cymbals with his hands. This installation consisting, basically of national percussion, produces low, shamanic sound. In 2002 the band takes part in the ETHNO-LIFE festival (Moscow). At "Rada & ternovnik"'s concerts the listeners mark strong emotional influence of music. Band has a great many of concerts not only in Moscow, but all around Russia. In France the albums of the band are issued by 'PRIKOSNOVENIE' recording-lable, which called their style "Russian dark-folk".
